Diary of a Presenter - Christmas Cheer at the Station

The Secklow Sounds family

The Secklow Sounds family met for their Christmas Meal on Thursday 17th December. We booked Calcutta's Indian Brasserie - a lovely restaurant in Stony Stratford that is part of a converted Abbey. With a new set of presenters, the funniest thing was trying to place a face to a voice!

Audrey & Gill - LifestyleMK get into the Christmas Spirit
It was a really lovely turnout, with many of the presenters and management team in attendance, and as always a great opportunity to chat to the person behind the sound. What a varied world of people make up community radio - trainers and teachers, gardeners, conductors, administrators, managers, engineers to name but a few. That's what enables each programme to have the human touch. It's not just about knowing your subject, it's about living life too.

Many of the shows will now break for Christmas although we do have some festive live shows and specials over the Holidays:

SOUL STEPPING - The Xmas Special will go live this Sunday 20th, then repeated on the 27th Dec

HARRY AND EDNA ON THE WIRELESS
- Seasonal special shows fall on 23rd & 30th Dec

EYE ON MK - now "DRIVE TIME" - Sean will be doing a live 'Getting ready for Christmas' show Monday-Thursday up to Xmas Eve. There will be a pre-recorded "Best of the guests" show for Xmas Day. ...and Sean is live on Bank Holiday Monday 4-6.

LIFESTYLE MK  - Christmas Cheer! (Saturdays 12pm - 2pm)
Audrey & Gill as Dick Whittington
and Puss In Boots

Oh Yes It Is...it was Panto Time in the LifestyleMK studio with our last show of the year. We're back on Jan 9th 2016!
Playing only Christmas #1's we looked at what Milton Keynes is doing to spread the Christmas spirit in the community. Dave's Man Cave suggested gifts for HIM, and Personal Trainer, Robb Henderson gave some great ideas for fitness fanatics. Vet Dr Jamie took a moment to reflect on the meaning of Christmas, and Feature presenter Ashley Alymann led the good wishes for 2016. Dave was made up as a Pantomime Dame live on air, we had a taster feature from Film Critic Tremayne Miller who will be guesting in the New Year, and came to the conclusion that "Die Hard" IS a Christmas Film!

VICCARS' ALBUM REVIEW - Appetite for Destruction (Guns 'N' Roses)

Secklow's Paul Viccars invites you to listen to his favourite albums. This week he's been listening to

Appetite for Destruction (1987)

Artist: Guns N' Roses
Label: Geffen Records
Producer: Mike Clink

Track listings:
1. Welcome to the Jungle ★★★★☆
2. It's So Easy ★★☆☆☆
3. Nighttrain ★★★☆☆
4. Out ta Get Me ★★☆☆☆
5. Mr. Brownstone ★★★☆☆
6. Paradise City ★★★★☆
7. My Michelle ★★★☆☆
8. Think About You ★★★☆☆
9. Sweet Child O' Mine ★★★★★
10. You're Crazy ★★☆☆☆
11. Anything Goes ★★☆☆☆
12. Rocket Queen ★★★☆☆

Guns N' Roses's debut album "Appetite for Destruction" is probably one of the most influential albums of my childhood, I was introduced to them by my mother who would constantly sing "Sweet Child O'Mine" to me as a child.

"Appetite for Destruction" is one of my all-time favourite albums, with such classics as "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City" & "Sweet Child O' Mine" this is easily one of those masterpiece records everyone appreciates with an estimated 30 million copies sold world, making it one of the top selling records in the United States.

The original artwork for the album created by American artist Robert Williams (see below), this artwork was rejected by the studio (maybe because there is a blatant raped victim being portrayed, while the rapist looks to be confronted by some crazy creature) and replaced by the famous cross and skulls (I prefer the cross and skulls).

With the album supposedly being written whilst the band were performing in Los Angles, apparently the memorable lyrics in "Welcome to the Jungle" came from a homeless man in Seattle trying to put fear in young runaways... "You know where you're? You're in the jungle baby; you're gonna die"

Overall Verdict: ★★★★☆
