Classics from Scratch with Catherine Rose, starting Friday 2nd October

Catherine Rose (c) Simon Richardson
Classics from Scratch, Secklow Sound’s very own classical radio show, starts again on Friday 2nd October for a run of 12 weeks, with presenter Catherine Rose. This show is for everybody – whether you know and love classical music or would like to know more. We aim to play around eight tracks during the show covering a huge variety of styles from the 14th century to the present, all introduced and explained in a friendly but expert way. The music might be playful, serious, weird, soothing, glorious, stirring or staggeringly lovely! Each week there’s a theme – for example, for our first show it’s ‘Vehicles’, and includes music by Mussorgsky, Offenbach, Honegger and John Adams. Our first guest is Jeffrey Ginn, who has worked for many years in the recording industry, specialising in classical music and especially in Scandinavian composers such as the great Finnish symphonist Sibelius. He gets to choose his three favourite tracks and tell us why he loves them so much. Join us on an adventure in listening!

Fighting the big C with Cake, Coffee and Comrades

Cake Stand - Marlborough School
Science Academy
Friday 25th Sept was MacMillan's "Biggest Coffee Morning".

The bakers of the group donate the cakes, and the lucky friends and family get to sample the goods
and make a donation to the MacMillan cause.

LifestyleMK's Ashley Alymann putting the
finishing touches to his cupcakes
Lifestyle:MK's "How To guru", Ashley Alymann was at the front of the queue for his pack (he even does a little feature about it for the show next week!!)

It's something that everyone can get involved in - and what a fantastic reason to eat cake!!

Ashley's spread in progress...

Everyone knows someone whose life has been affected by cancer (whether their own or someone they love), and sadly, success in treatment varies - so every little donated goes a long way in research, training nurses, as well as giving information, advice and support so that you never feel alone.

Loads of local organisations got involved this year - and while the Lifestyle Team were banging down Ashley's door, our mouths were watering at all the other fantastic events being held.

Marlborough School Science Academy
Marlborough School Science Academy in St Albans, Hertfordshire (also pictured) raised £245 from the staff.

Northamptonshire Healthcare (Newland House), Northampton  raised £60.

Milton Keynes College (Care Professions), Milton Keynes raised £150 from the students.

...and Ashley raised £180 (and is hoping the leftovers might raise a little more tomorrow!!)

To find out more about MacMillan, or to hold an event yourself, just click HERE

Absolutely AMAZING work to all those who got involved, or are about to hold theirs (you don't HAVE to have it on the 25th!!)

Let's keep fighting the good fight together.

Eye on your health this winter

Winter is coming

Sean Calvert (Eye on MK, )
"Eye on MK" and "Lifestyle MK" got chatting this week about Winter preparations.  I don't think anyone could have failed to notice the temperatures falling...and certainly the heating has gone on in the "LifestyleMK" household.

Sean ("Eye on MK") has been talking to Age UK and other MK organisations about their support for residents in the Winter months and has been finding out about other cold season preparations.

"LifestyleMK" meanwhile has been helping out one of the local NHS Trusts with their in-house, "Flu Jab Education Campaign".

LifestyleMK's Gill modelling our new
"Secklow Sounds" jackets
LifestyleMK's Audrey

Every October staff within the NHS are urged to get their flu jab as it will help keep them healthy, and in turn, their patients safe from what is quite a debilitating illness.  Unlike the "common cold", flu can even hospitalize you with shivers, fevers, aches and pains.

As such many of the NHS Trusts work to educate and encourage their staff on the value of getting that vaccination - the "LifestyleMK" team (who satisfy their thirst for theatre, film and media with CLICK Arts) were happy to help out.

The education campaign seeks to "myth bust" those urban beliefs about flu and the flu jab reminding staff that:
LifestyleMK's Dave
in role
- It IS safe at any stage of pregnancy
- It doesn't make you feel THAT bad!!
- Even if you miss the "first round" of jabs, it's never too late

...and if you want to help out in any community initiatives this Winter, Sean is also going to be chatting to the Food Bank and Help the Homeless MK and giving you lots of ideas to contribute.

Tune into "Eye on MK" every Monday at 4pm, and catch past shows HERE
...and if you would like to talk about what your organisation is doing to support the community in Winter - please email Sean at: sean@secklowsounds.org

"LifestyleMK" launches on Saturday October 3rd at 12noon, and you can listen to our promo shows HERE and get in touch by clicking this LINK.

Audrey (LifestyleMK @draudreyt)
We had a fantastic time meeting the students,  chatting to them about their courses and what they loved about the College.

...and of course, couldn't help but notice such a wide pool of talent and enthusiasm from the staff too!!  We think we might have found our next Sports Reporter as well as some great ideas for new shows in the teaching teams!!

Mike, Secklow Sounds' CEO with Laura

We're not just looking for show ideas and presenters, if you want to produce, learn the technical side, or just get involved with the voice of the MK community, we'd love to hear from you!!

Although digital at the moment (and really - this actually means that if you have internet access you can hear us EVERYWHERE, any time, any place, anyhow!!), we've been granted Ofcom status and the 105.5FM bandwidth from January 2016 and we can't wait!!

REWIND - in case you missed it

Harry & Edna on the Wireless, Wednesdays 7pm

This week author Mike Brown joined Harry & Edna on the Wireless to talk about his book ‘The Pin Up of WW2’
The book charts the history of the pin-up which came of age by the end of the 19th century, with the advent of photography and the 'dirty French postcard'.
In the Second World War the pin-up became the darling of millions of young men suddenly torn from their families and plunged into the all-male environments of garrisons and the front line.
Images from the UK, U.S., France and Germany are included. Mr Brown said: 'Throughout the 1930s and '40s, there can’t have been a barrack room in Europe that wasn't filled with torn-out magazine pages, photos and postcards of pin-ups, either hidden in drawers and kitbags or boldly displayed on walls and notice boards.
'Pin-ups went to war just as much as sweetheart letters, uniforms and artillery and, as well as being a delight to the eye, were a bedrock of troop morale. Now, at last, they've been brought together in a single, fully illustrated history and celebration of the wartime pin-up.'
'The Pin-up in World War II' is published by Sabrestorm at all good bookshops and online retailers priced £6.99.

Go Baa-my in Campbell Park

Sheep in Campbell Park!
By Laura Tarry

The city’s popular flock of sheep have returned to Campbell Park to continue their important conservation work.

The flock of 75 sheep graze about half the park and are a sight enjoyed by all. As part of our farming portfolio, the parks large grass area offer great grazing for the sheep.  Periodic grazing is also a vital conservation tool, helping to manage large areas of grassland in order to create a much richer diversity of wildlife. Grazing deters weeds and scrub and encourages the growth of wildflower rich meadows. The sheep will remain in the park until 30th September.

Landscape and Operations Director of The Parks Trust, Rob Riekie said: "Please can we remind dog owners, cyclists and walkers to continue to enjoy the park and take particular care when travelling through grazing areas.

Cyclists are advised to slow down and all dog walkers should keep their dogs on a lead and under close control when within any grazing area.

For more information call The Parks Trust on: 01908 233600

The Parks Trust is a charity that cares for Milton Keynes’ parks and green spaces – the river valleys, ancient woodlands, lakesides, parks and landscaped areas alongside the main roads that make the city such a great place to live, work and visit.

Shedding the years - 24th Sept 2015

Sept 24th in Milton Keynes brings the first regional ‘Meet the Shedders’ get together.

Milton Keynes had the first "Shed" in the region and now there are about 20 either established or in formation in the area and over 100 across the country.

As well as a place for [primarily] older men to meet and get involved in a wide range of different activities in a social setting, Men’s Sheds are also addressing significant health and wellbeing issues highlighted in reports such as ‘Isolation – the emerging crisis for older men’ published last year by the charity Independent Age.

2012 Project Team Men in Sheds MK (AgeUK MK newsletter)
We want to see more Sheds established in Milton Keynes and across the region and, as well as telling older men about them, we want to engage with health and social care providers in a more proactive partnership – so that Men’s Sheds are fully recognised for their contribution to the health and wellbeing of older men in local communities.

To find out more about the event click HERE

AgeUK is also seeking your support for POSTCARDS ANON

Postcards Anon, the Age UK Milton Keynes annual ‘secret’ exhibition and fundraising sale is back for a fourth year.

We are asking local people to create original postcard size artworks [6”x4” or 7”x5”] that we can sell at the exhibition at Gallery 200, the premium exhibition space at Silbury Boulevard, in November to raise vital funds. They can be any medium - except photographs.

Send your artworks - signed only on the reverse - together with your name and contact details to Michelle Turnbull at The Peartree Centre, 1 Chadds Lane, Peartree Bridge MK6 3EB - by Friday 30th October.
