Join the board!

Opportunities to join the Board of Trustees at The Parks Trust
by Laura Tarry

Are you passionate about Milton Keynes and its parks, lakes and woods? Could you spare some time as a volunteer? Would you like to contribute to your community? If so, we would like to invite you to apply to become a Trustee for The Parks Trust.
The Parks Trust is a self-financing charity that owns and cares for 5,000 acres of Milton Keynes’ parks and green spaces and is looking for three new Trustees to join its Board in 2016.
Trustees are volunteers who are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the Trust and ensuring it is performing well.
David Foster, Chief Executive of The Parks Trust, said: “We are looking for people with the right business acumen and skill set appropriate to our organisation. We value all of our board and their commitment in their three year term. We appreciate the knowledge and experience the volunteers currently bring to the board. As part of our succession planning it is now time for some of those Trustees to stand down and for new Trustees to be appointed.
“The Board of Trustees are responsible for setting the strategic direction of the Trust and ensuring it performs well.  Due to the Trust’s significant role in the city’s future, being a Trustee is a position of influence and great responsibility, now and for future generations.”
This year we are particularly looking to appoint people with knowledge and experience of:
·         Wildlife and Land Management
·         Business Management and financial investment
·         Commercial property investment and management
Trustees are people who care passionately about Milton Keynes and who recognise the vital contribution the parks and landscape make to the city’s prosperity, and the quality of life of everyone living and working here.  If you support our aims and are prepared to give some of your time to this important role, we would like to hear from you.  The role of Trustee is interesting and rewarding and one in which your knowledge and skills will be harnessed to make a really positive contribution.
How To Apply To Be A Trustee
If you would like to be considered please take a look at the details of the role on our website and then email or write to David Foster, Chief Executive at: d.foster@theparkstrust.com

ESCAPE THE ROOM in the "home of the codebreakers"

The Escape Game phenomenon is slowly making its way around the UK.  Based on the Japanese computerised "Escape the room" games, it was Europe that first discovered the enjoyment - and team building benefits of a "live" version.

Teams of 2 - 6 (some London games cater for larger teams) are "locked" in a room for 60 minutes and have to find and solve clues and decipher codes and puzzles in order to "escape".  Each room has a storyline - often "Mummy's Tomb", "Sherlock Holmes/Murder Mystery" and a "Heist" in the UK please visit the extensive blog by Chris M Dickson: www.exitgames.co.uk to find games, and learn more.

LifestyleMK's Dr Audrey, along with business partner Richard Atterton, is opening the first Escape Game in the Milton Keynes Area in March.  Not only is it in the area - but it's in BLETCHLEY - where better than the "Home of the Codebreakers"!?

Audrey says "We love Escape Games, and have been playing them around the world since early last year.  When the opportunity came to open our own we jumped at it.  Ours is designed by Pfeffermind Games in Berlin, and we have been able to adapt the story with them to suit a Turing/Imitation Game styled room."

There is only one room available at the moment and it can cater for a team of 2 - 6.  Please visit the website for more information  and to book:  www.agreatescaperoom.com

This week they are offering the chance to win one of 3 FREE GAMES on Friday 18th March (6pm, 7.30pm and 9pm) for their launch weekend (details on their fb page) and all games are offered at a 20% discount on Saturday March 19th and Sunday March 20th if you type in the code LAUNCH on booking.

Please keep checking their fb page: https://www.facebook.com/agreatescaperoom/  and website for more opening offers through March and April.

Clean for the Queen

The Parks Trust staff and volunteers are set to take part in one of the UK’s largest litter picks
by Laura Tarry

Clean for The Queen is a call for volunteers to join the UK’s largest litter pick and help get your local area looking its very best in the year of The Queen’s 90th birthday.
The aim of the campaign is to attract one million people during a special clean-up weekend on 4, 5 and 6 March 2016.
The Queen for the Queen Campaign Director Adrian Evans said: “Our ambition is to create a community inspired, grass-roots mass action event – one that will become a recurring annual initiative. We feel that marking The Queen’s 90th birthday with the inaugural clean-up is a wonderful way to kick-start it to life.
"We want to show that millions of people in this country care passionately about the litter affecting the nation and are prepared to get out and do something about it. Everyone in this country will reap the benefits.”
The Parks Trust staff and volunteers will host their litter pick on Saturday 5th March from 10am-12noon, Stanton Low Park, Milton Keynes.
The Parks Trust Head of Community Engagement Briony Fox
said: “We value our volunteers and all their hard work throughout the year. Being part of Clean for the Queen means we can encourage more people to get involved so that everyone can enjoy a cleaner place to live.”
Please meet in the car park off Selkirk Drive, Oakridge Park.
Litter pickers, gloves and sacks will be provided. Please wear sensible clothing and footwear. See theparkstrust.com or call 01908 233600 for information.

Junior Rangers Conference

Eight schools across Milton Keynes enjoyed a fun filled day getting up close to nature with The Parks Trust staff to celebrate the annual Junior Rangers’ Conference.
by Laura Tarry
Junior Rangers with James Walsh, Education Ranger of The Parks Trust

Students from eight different schools spent the day with The Parks Trust staff at the Junior Rangers’ Conference on Tuesday 26 January 2016.  Twenty-four Junior Rangers enjoyed a day at our education centre at Linford Lakes Nature Reserve.
The Junior Rangers’ Conference gave students the opportunity to find out about The Parks Trust team and their roles in the community, take a tour of the nature reserve; try bird watching and have a go at pond dipping to see what creatures they could identify.
The Parks Trust Biodiversity Officer, Martin Kincaid was on hand to answer questions about the types of animals they may spot in the Nature Reserve he said:
“It was great to spend time with the Junior Rangers and see their enthusiasm for the natural world, while giving them an insight into the wildlife of Linford Lakes.
“The students were keen to learn about the birds at the reserve and the environment they live in.”
The role of a Junior Ranger is to tell other children in their school about what they can see in their parks and how they can keep their parks clean and full of wildlife.  Rangers have three main tasks: they read out a monthly parks’ bulletin in assembly; run competitions, quizzes and campaigns to raise awareness about issues in the parks; and set up and maintain a noticeboard with posters, pictures and maps.
Students from the eight schools presented ideas to The Parks Trust staff on how they will continue to act as ambassadors of the trust and some of their plans for the coming year.
Caylin Gans, The Parks Trust Education Ranger said: “Our Junior Rangers are valued members of our community. The Conference celebrates their commitment to showing interest in learning about the environment. It is also a good opportunity to award success and highlight those who have gone above and beyond their role.”
The Parks Trust runs an extensive education programme and provides environmental education sessions, including Forest Schools, for over 5,000 local children.
This scheme is free to join, simple to run and is fully supported by staff at The Parks Trust. If you are interested in signing your school up to the Junior Rangers scheme or want more information, please get in touch with Caylin Gans, Education Ranger, on 01908 255378 or email c.gans@theparkstrust.com.

Viccars' Film Review - The Big Short

The Big Short (2016)

Director: Adam McKay

Writer: Adam McKay, Charles Randolph

Cast: Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt.

Genre: Bio, Drama.

When watching The Big Short, a movie based on Michael Lewis’s book, I could see the similarities with The Wolf of Wall Street. The narrative style and breaking of the 4th wall are all very similar. But instead of using the same narrator (Ryan Goslings character Jared Vennett) throughout the film, Adam unfortunately chose to explain complex financial jargon using celebrity faces, one of which being Margot Robbie in a bubble bath, whom starred in The Wolf of Wall Street (seriously? Think we wouldn’t catch on to that one Adam?), and then later with Selena Gomez playing Blackjack. These cameos take me out of the movie and didn’t seem necessary, they should of put Ryan Gosling in that bubble bath sipping champagne, that would of made more sense.

It’s shame because the underlying story of the stock market crash in 2008 is a seriously interesting. The performances given by Steve Carell playing Mark Baum, the only man with a conscience, was the standout for me. He depicted how awfully ignorant the whole system was and knowing the underlying truth, this is a standout performance from the previously comedic actor(this guy played Brick for crying out loud!). Also another performance worth a mention is Cristian Bales depiction of aloof genius Michael Burry, a hedge fund manager whom blasts out heavy metal and walks about the office bare foot and clenching drum sticks, betting against the American economy all the while being under extreme pressure by his investors.

Unfortunately the film had all the makings of being a great but falls short when it came to the execution, I felt the film didn’t need any of the celebrity cameos breaking the 4th wall that could have easily been executed by the stories narrator Ryan Gosling character, the typically stereotypical arrogant banker. I can’t tell you how gutted I am for this movie as the underlying story, is really something of interest, the script written by Adam McKay and Charles Randolph’s seemed to have created something decent but it seemed like the movie was too busy and needed to just be simple, focussing on the story at hand.

Viccars' Film Review - The Revenant

Paul Viccars (of The Mayo and Viccars Show) has turned his critical mind to Movie reviews:

Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu

Writer: Mark L. Smith, Alejandro González Iñárritu

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter.

Genre: Action, Drama.

Leo is so darn determined to get that Oscar on his mantelpiece he even had a fist fight with a bear!

The film is based partly on the novel “The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge” written by Michael Punke; which focuses on the story of Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his death defying journey of vengeance after being left for dead in the American mid-West during the 1820’s.

During fur trading endeavour lead by Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson) and his men consisting of the selfish and cowardly John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) and a young man with a heart full of morals Jim Bridger (Will Poulter); whom right from the get go are ambushed by Native Americans in a brutal and action packed scene. It was shot in such a way it felt like you were there with them running for your life, this movie takes you on a sensory journey and puts you in the heart of it all.

Alejandro González Iñárritu isn’t alone, choosing to work again with cinematography Emmanuel Lubezki who again brings visually stunning scenes to screen. The way he catches the American wilderness in such tranquillity is something to be admired, Lubezki’s high standards have become expected with his previous work on films such as Birdman and Gravity both of which winning him Oscar’s for cinematography; if you thought two Oscar’s on the bounce would get him slacking off then you’re wrong!

Leo’s acting is again on point, the man can do no wrong and he is consumed by his character. Tom Hardy also delivered a decent performance becoming a very easy to hate villain. The end fight scene between the two is something that puts you on the edge of your seat, I became so engrossed that I genuinely wanted revenge for Leo, no punches were held in this brutal climax!
This film reminded me of another similar plotted movie The Gladiator, obviously the plots are similar
but also with the whole visual aspect and the spirituality undertones. Every pause for a poetic pan out on the American landscape is like a pause for breath during this extremely intense endeavour.

Every pause for a poetic pan out on the American landscape is like a pause for breathe during this extremely intense endeavour.

Hopefully The Revenant can emulate Gladiators success.

We also have an exclusive feature in Dave's Man Cave from "The Unexpectant Father" - a blogger who writes about his experiences with infertility:https://www.facebook.com/unexpectantf...

Making a right Spectre-acle!

Did anyone catch Lifestyle MK's Dr Audrey in "Spectre"? It's out on DVD soon, but if you are a little curious - and fancy a giggle at "honest trailers" - she's on at around 3.16 after the lines "...and a bunch of crap you don't want to see in a Bond Movie" ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mu4kFqmv3RM
