The Parks Trust secures National Lottery investment

By Hannah Bodley
The Parks Trust has received initial support* from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and Big Lottery Fund for the Great Linford Manor Park project, it was announced today.
The project aims to restore and interpret the historic parkland around Great Linford Manor in Milton Keynes. It will revive the character of the park’s 18th Century landscape design, which includes a water garden with cascades and a ‘Wilderness’. The project will create a rich ornamental park, with a great sense of history, and enable more people to come and enjoy the park’s wealth of historic features and attractive landscape.
At this stage of the project HLF and Big Lottery Fund will provide development funding of £321,200 over the next two years to help The Parks Trust progress the restoration plan and to consult with the local community. The Trust will then apply for a full grant of £3.16 million to implement the project.
Commenting on the award, Phil Bowsher, Head of Landscape, Strategy & Development, The Parks Trust said: “We’re delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this support so we can work-up the plans to Reveal, Revive and Restore’ Great Linford Manor Park. This is a significant step towards us being able to restore the park’s important heritage. Our outline proposals include new facilities with guided trails, play areas, and interpretation of the site’s evolution since the 7th Century. An activity programme aims to provide more events in the park and create new volunteering and training opportunities. A sculpture project, education and outreach programmes will enable more people to enjoy the park and a new Friends Group is proposed to enable people to become involved in the restoration of the park.”
The support for Great Linford Manor Park comes as part of an announcement of £30.7million for 16 parks across the UK.
HLF’s Chair Sir Peter Luff, said, on behalf of HLF and Big Lottery Fund: “It’s clear that our parks are important to us in countless ways – from physical and mental wellbeing to a connection with nature and our heritage. It’s also clear however that public parks must work in new ways to respond to the funding challenges they face and this investment, thanks to National Lottery players, will help them to do this.

“We’re delighted to announce this funding today, especially in time for the tenth Love Parks Week, and look forward to a bright future for these parks.”

Wildlife in Stony Stratford will benefit from river improvements

River bypass drone shot by DroneMK
by Laura Tarry

The Parks Trust and The Environment Agency join forces to protect wildlife by opening up the old river channel at Millfield, Stony Stratford.
Staff from both organisations have invested in the improvements to the river channel to improve the flow of water around the structure to allow a fish passage. It has created 250 metres of new habitat, which in the future will be used for fish spawning.
The partnership project has cost £70,000, which helps with the connectivity of the river life to move more freely below and above the Millfield sluice, while offering a refuge to fish and other wildlife if flooding occurs.
The Environment Agency’s Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology team, worked with The Parks Trust’s staff to help deliver the project.
Rob Riekie, Landscape and Operations Director at The Parks Trust said: “The designed structure at the inlet allows more water in the channel at times of high water, and reduces to a smaller, consistent flow in the summer, allowing the sluice and the main channel to continue to be the main water course, while continuing to enable invertebrates and the rivers other wildlife (e.g. fish) to move freely either side of the sluice gate.
It also acts as a fish refuge when the river is in heavy flood, helping protect fry and fish from being washed away while staying in river channels.”

Rob Clapham, Project Manager from the Environment Agency said: “The Great Ouse is heavily modified in this area, which has negative impacts on fish and invertebrate populations.  This new channel and other enhancement works in the area will help to maintain a healthy and diverse river ecology for future generations to enjoy”.

The Parks Trust remains focussed on providing inspirational parks for future generations

by Laura Tarry

The Parks Trusts’ Annual Report and Financial Statements for 2015-16 have been published today. The long-term future of the Trust is looking bright as we continue to move toward financial sustainability.
The statements for the year ending March 2016 show the charity has grown due to the success of its commercial property and investments.
David Foster, Chief Executive of The Parks Trust, said:  “We have managed to grow our property portfolio to some £89million and also have financial investments valued at around £38m. Part of that growth has come from new endowments as we have taken on new land as the city has continued to expand and part from astute commercial management and investment over the years.
“As a result, the Trust is in pretty good financial shape but we are all too aware of what another recession could do to the Trust.  In 2008 we had around 30% wiped off the value of our assets and had to cut expenditure and shelve a number of projects that we are only now able to bring forward again.  We still need to continue to grow our asset base if we are to be able to weather financial storms that may come our way in future. You have to remember we are entirely self-financing, the cost of maintaining the parks is not getting any less and we have this job to do in perpetuity. ”
The Parks Trust cares for 25% of the city and continues to take ownership of additional areas of green space as Milton Keynes expands.
Maintaining the green space is the primary aim of the Trust, but we are also committed to enhancing biodiversity, delivering environmental education, providing exciting leisure and recreation facilities and events.
David added: “All of our work is funded through our commercial property, our investments and various enterprises on our parkland including the commercial leisure activities at Willen Lake and our farming.
“The success of our business model means that we have been able to spend more than ever this year (over £7.5m) looking after our parks, lakes and woodlands and are able to put plans in place to introduce new facilities into the parks and invest further in the operation of Willen Lake to make it an even better all year round attraction in the years to come.
“Most importantly, the parks, lakes and landscapes under our control are in good shape and are being well used and greatly appreciated.”
Looking ahead our three priorities for the coming year remain:
1.     Continue to maintain the parks to a high stand and improve the biodiversity.
2.     Continue to build the asset base to ensure the Trust can be financially sustainable for the long term.
3.     Introduce new features and facilities in the parks.

o    We hope to be able to pursue our plans for a major restoration project in the grounds of Great Linford Manor. We are awaiting the outcome of a bid with the Heritage Lottery Fund.
o    Planning permission is being sought for an adventure golf course and cafĂ© at Furzton Lake.
o    And we’ll shortly be consulting on plans for exciting new facilities in Campbell Park and Willen Lake.
