The Parks Trust and Rural TV Presenter, Adam Henson Open New Floodplain Forest Nature Reserve

by Sarah Featley

Adam Henson, farmer and rural TV presenter, officially opened The Parks Trust’s new Floodplain Forest Nature Reserve on Thursday 25th August 2016.
The Parks Trust has converted 48 hectares of the Great Ouse Valley near Old Wolverton, Milton Keynes into the reserve, with the help of Hanson UK.  The transformation of the reserve began with an initial idea 20 years ago, with work commencing in 2007.
Adam was joined at the opening event by Cllr Steve Coventry, Mayor of Milton Keynes, key representatives from The Parks Trust including David Foster, Chief Executive and Phil Bowsher, Head of Landscape Strategy and Development, and David Weeks, Head of PR and Communications at Hanson.
Members of the public who attended on the day were able to meet Adam and take a look around the site, and also join in on a number of fun activities, including guided walks, bird spotting and bug hunting. A real treat for many was the sighting of a Great White Egret, an uncommon large white heron which has only started breeding in the UK within the last four years.
This development of the Floodplain Forest Nature reserve puts Milton Keynes at the forefront of demands both in the UK and internationally to create and restore wetland habitats. The comprehensive restoration project incorporates a variety of elements (such as interlinked channels, shallow pools and gravel islands) to return the area to what it might have looked like more than 5,000 years ago – a wildlife-rich floodplain forest.
In addition, the quarrying that took place as part of the development generated around 686,000 tonnes of minerals, most of which was used to meet local demand.
Phil Bowsher commented: “We’re thrilled that our new Floodplain Forest Nature Reserve is now officially open. It was a great day with lots of visitors enjoying a guided tour of this special area, and plenty of takers for a selfie with
Adam!
“The new reserve forms a key part of our long term vision to increase biodiversity in Milton Keynes and make landscapes packed with wildlife accessible to people. We’re very much looking forward to seeing how the area develops over the months and years to come.”
Martin Kincaid, Biodiversity Officer, at The Parks Trust added: “Now the reserve is open, we’re very keen to encourage the public to make the use of the area and see how it changes throughout the year; with different species of birds and animals visiting and the changes in vegetation; we also have plans to introduce ponies and cattle for grazing just as the prehistoric forest would have been grazed by wild animals in the past.
“It’s a fantastic spot for walkers although we ask that dogs be kept on their leads throughout the area so as not to disturb the wildlife. It is also important that people remember that the reserve will flood so it might not be fully accessible all year round!”

Factfile:

·         The project has involved the removal by quarrying of sand and gravel deposits from the river floodplain by Hanson UK, The Parks Trust’s partner in the scheme.
·         The removal of the sand and gravel has enabled the formation of a mosaic of new water channels, pools, marsh areas and small islands within the river floodplain.
·         Work to extract the gravel from the site began in 2007 and was completed in 2014.
·         The landscape will flood regularly when water levels in the river Great Ouse rise. As well as creating a wildlife-rich habitat, the project has also been intended to enable the more natural functioning of the river floodplain.

·         This varied floodplain habitat will mature into a diverse ecosystem supporting a wide range of plants and insects, amphibians, birds, fish and mammals such as otter and water vole.

Film Writer Tremayne Miller reviews The Intent

NS – Nicky Slimting films & purplegeko Presents

THE INTENT
Trust No One

Review by Tremayne Miller

Written and produced by Nicky Slimting Walker and Femi Oyeniran
Directed by Femi Oyeniran and Kalvadour

I liked the thought provoking quotes the film carried throughout, for example ‘Without good opposition you can never
be great.’
And the most poignant and meaningful scene in the entire film for me came when Mitch (Femi Oyeniran) asked his daughter why she liked church so much, and she responded:  “because it’s fun and people care about you.”

In accordance with an article I read recently on the British adventurer, writer and television presenter, Bear Grylls, he believes that ‘religion has nothing to do with entrusting your life to Christ;’ no, in fact, he was only too quick to point out that Jesus Himself was “the least religious person you'll meet.”
Bear told Relevant Magazine, “It was no more complicated than that.” And further added that all God asked was that we sort of open up the door to him and then he will take care  of the rest.
I felt that Mitch’s daughter’s speech carried the same message.
‘The Intent’ differed from ‘Brotherhood’ (the third and final instalment in The Kidulthood Trilogy), which I had seen the week before it, in that it contained little humour and an awful lot of gratuitous violence (too much in my opinion!!); and quite frankly I was disturbed by some of the audience members' reactions to it! For example, deeming it highly amusing, when a character sustained a fatal injury to the neck, with  blood gushing from the wound at an uncontrollable rate.

The film, without a doubt is technically well put together, however with the variety of weak story strands, the storyline-stream is not able to flow with ease, and as a consequence of this we, the voyeur feel absolutely no affinity with any of the characters, which numbersome as they are hold little purpose.

Something to ask ourselves is whether another layer is added to a Gangster film if a real life gangster is employed to star in it? And realistically, in the case of ‘The Intent,’ whether or not the concept of The TIC Crew transforming their lives within the space of two week is realistic? As they begin peddling weed at a low level to carrying out armed robberies, where they able to afford all the guns, hard drugs and girls they want.

The film was released in cinemas on July 29th, as well as on digital and home entertainment ©Tremayne Miller

Film Writer Tremayne Miller reviews NERVE

Nerve
By LifestyleMK's Film writer, Tremayne Miller

Nerve , directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, written by Jessica Sharzer.
Starring Emma Roberts, Dave Franco and Juliette Lewis
The Hollywood Reporter writes ‘visually engaging if not very convincing,’ and I would happen to agree.
Nerve  is based on the 2012 debut don’t putdownable novel by Jeanne Ryan.
For fans of The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games was originally a series of three adventure novels written by the American novelist Suzanne Collins. The series set in ‘The Hunger Games universe’ follows the young characters of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. The novels – The Hunger Games (2008), Catching Fire (2009), and Mockingjay (2010) have all been developed into films, with the adaptation of Mockingjay split across two parts.
The universe, a dystopia, is set in Panem, a country consisting of the wealthy Capitol and twelve districts, each in various states of poverty.
Every year children are selected from each district to take part in an annual televised “death match” called The Hunger Games.
Another comparison can be made with 1988 film, Heathers, where two high school students (Winona Ryder and Christian Slater) unintentionally make suicide popular.
‘A high-stakes online game of dares turns deadly.’
Nerve tells the story of high school senior "Vee" (Roberts) who enters an online reality video game of “truth or dare” (minus the truth) called "Nerve" along with other player (Franco), and it isn’t long before the game escalates to the point where the series of levels become dangerous, at the same time each move they make is manipulated by a community of anonymous “watchers.”
“Nerve” interestingly raises the question of ‘the obsession of social media’ within society, and teenagers who become so lonely that they remain penned up in their rooms, unable to properly develop much needed social skills in order to fully thrive in today’s world. Gradually, it would seem that social media has managed to change the course of DNA in our friendships, as the film proves to be the case.
Vee (Roberts), at first finds the game exhilarating but just how far will she go before she loses her “Nerve”?!

Milton Keynes Council transfers Stanton Low Park to The Parks Trust

by Hannah Bodley
Milton Keynes Council has completed the work to establish Stanton Low Park and transferred the new park into the care of The Parks Trust.
The park, which covers 50 hectares of land offering stunning views across the Great Ouse Valley, lies next to the Grand Union Canal and the Oakridge Park housing development in Stantonbury. The provision of the Park, along with other areas of open space and children’s play areas within Oakridge Park, was a planning requirement of the new 530-home development. Following engagement with stakeholders, interest groups and residents Milton Keynes Council prepared a Master Plan, secured planning permission and undertook the implementation and construction of the park, using funds from a planning agreement with the housing developer, and have now transferred it into the custodianship of The Parks Trust
As well as the new parkland, the land transfer from Milton Keynes Council to The Parks Trust included the archaeological remains of the ancient St Peter’s Church, which lies in the north west corner of Stanton Low Park and has recently benefited from conservation work by the Council, and Joan’s Piece, an area of plantation woodland on the west side of the Canal overlooking Bradwell Lake.
Commenting on the completion of Stanton Low Park and the land transfer, Phil Bowsher, Head of Landscape, Strategy & Development, The Parks Trust said: “We’re delighted that Milton Keynes Council has delivered such an excellent new park, which is a tremendous asset for local people to enjoy. The Trust is pleased to be able take this land and to look after it for evermore for the benefit of the public. This is an example of a true partnership project between Milton Keynes Council and The Parks Trust which has benefitted from the invaluable support of Stantonbury Parish Council, the Oakridge Park Residents’ Association and the Save St Peter’s Church Group. We look forward to continuing to work with all involved now that the new park and the other assets have been passed into our care. Our aims are to conserve the area’s archaeological heritage and wildlife-rich meadows and to maintain the park’s new facilities, including children’s play areas, footpaths and seating, in the best possible condition for use by the local community.”

Paul Sanders, Assistant Director Community Facilities, Milton Keynes Council said, “This transfer follows a lot of detailed groundwork carried out by Milton Keynes Council, working closely with the developers to maximise their contribution to the local area under a planning agreement designed to provide amenities to this new estate”.
“It is a good example of partnership between a range of stakeholders and will allow future residents, and visitors, to enjoy this stunning park, together with its associated historical and cultural assets.”
