Kids are growing up fast in Brotherhood writes LifestyleMK's Tremayne Miller

Tremayne Miller, Film Critic
by Tremayne Miller
Film Critic: LifestyleMK & HeyUGuys

Brotherhood
Dir: Noel Clarke
Screenplay: Noel Clarke
With: Noel Clarke, Olivia Chenery, Ashley Thomas, Nick Nevern, Steven Cree, Tonia Sotiropoulou, Arnold Oceng, Aaron Eaton.

Running time: 1 hr, 45 min

Initial release: 29 August, 2016

British multihyphenate, Noel Clarke returns with "Brotherhood” to complete The Kidulthood Trilogy Series.
The Trilogy began with "Kidulthood" in 2006, followed by "Adulthood" in 2008.
“Kidulthood” kickstarted what Complex UK coined as the "British hood film movement," which analysed the lives of a group of disillusioned teenagers within west London. Directed by Menhaj Huda, with a script written by Noel Clarke, who starred in the film, then went on to direct the sequel “Adulthood.” "Adulthood" (2008) picks up 6 years after "Kidulthood," and follows Clarke, who is released from prison after being found guilty of murder.
In "BrotherhoodClarke reprises his role as the lead protagonist, Sam, which is scheduled for release in the UK to tie in with the 10-year anniversary release of the film "Kidulthood."
“Brotherhood” is a powerful drama with the right balance of non-gratuitous violence and humour, a specific example of which is an “awkward comedy” moment, when Arnold Oceng, who plays Henry lies to his wife about who he’s on the phone to , and instead uses Tesco clubcard as a cover-up.  Comedy that’s written in such a way that it appears off-the-cuff is a high skill, and in heightened form scenarios are made much funnier as a result.
Before the private screening of Brotherhood got underway Noel Clarke, who introduces it says it felt like his debut, and that this time around it was about him collecting all the things from the other two movies that were right.
Echoes of Clarke being a father of three in real life are dotted throughout, one example being when Henry (Arnold Oceng) defends Sam from the baddies, leading them to believe that his son’s ninja turtle toy stowed underneath his non-gangster type jacket is a gun!
I was stunned to learn that “Brotherhood” is the only British Trilogy in existence but felt it a well put together movie in its own right, where one responds most favourable towards Sam, as if you are his  sidekick. Rest assured you will get up from your cinema seat with the biggest urge to immediately catch back to back the first two films in the sequence!'

The Guardian headline on 9 September readsBrotherhood actor Aaron Eaton dies days after film's release.’ The 29-year-old played Teardrop in the third installment of The Kidulthood Films.

The cause of Eaton’s death remains unclear but the film’s director, Noel Clarke and the grime rapper Stormzy, who also appear in the movie, were among those to pay tribute.

Eaton, who lived in south London, was nominated for best actor prize at the International Achievement Recognition awards for the role he played in the 2015 British film Awol – Absent Without Love.

Brotherhood began its preview run on 28 August and grossed £971,000 in its first few days of release, with a total of£1.98 in the first week of opening.

There's something evil afoot writes film critic Tremayne Miller

LifestyleMK's film critic and writer Tremayne Miller gives her insights on "Blair Witch"

Blair Witch

From the director of ‘You’re Next’ & ‘The Guest’

Adam Wingard
Rating: 15 Run Time: 89 minutes

Cast
• James Allen McCune as James Donahue
• Valorie Curry as Talia
• Callie Hernandez as Lisa
• Brandon Scott as Peter
• Wes Robinson as Lane
• Corbin Reid as Ashley

Blair Witch formerly sold under the false name of “The Woods” is directed by Adam Wingard and written by Simon Barrett. It is a direct sequel to 1999 film The Blair Witch Project, which follows a group of college students as they bravely head into the Black Hills Forest, in Maryland in order to uncover the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Heather, James’s sister.

Many believe there to be a connection to the legend of The Blair Witch.

Blair Witch – the sequel is presented in a similar vein to Paranormal Activity of 2007, an American Independent presented in the style of “found footage.”

The search party are at first hopeful, particularly when locals offer up their services, and guide them through the deepest, darkest part of the forest but as the nights wear thin the group is visited by an intimidating presence, and it isn’t long before it becomes a menacing reality.

During the filming of blair witch - the sequel, actors were provided with clues as to what their next location would be via messages in milk crates found by using Global Positioning Satellite systems. Individual instructions were then given to each of them, which they would use by way of helping them improvise actions throughout the course of the day.

The Blair Witch Project of 1999, relays the fictionalised story of three student filmmakers (Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard) who disappear whilst on a hike in the Black Hills, intending to shoot a documentary on the local legend of The Blair Witch.

Viewers are then informed that the three were never to be heard of or seen again, despite video footage and sound equipment having been unearthed at the scene, this "recovered footage” is, in fact, the film the viewer is watching.

Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was released on October 27, 2000, and another film was planned for the following year, however, it did not materialise.

The backstory for the film, a “faux legend,” was made up by filmmakers Sánchez and Myrick, and it detailed The Curse of the Blair Witch in mocumentary form, which was then broadcast on the SciFi Channel in 1999 prior to the film’s release.

The mocumentary was to lead people into believing that the legend was true, least it did me and I recall a group of my friends teasing me about it at the Sixth Form college I was attending at the time in Derby, in Derbyshire!

Myrick and Sanchez were to develop the idea of paranormal activity after having seen lots of documentaries on the subject, which they found to be a lot scarier than average horror movies.

“Found footage” is scarcely tackled by modern horror these days, which is baffling when you consider the lengths technology has grown in recent years.

However, Hollywood’s interest in “found footage” has waned, at the same time that Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension is about to be released.

It is thought that it will be the final installment in this genre of “flagship franchise.”

A positive - “found footage” has never really fit into the Hollywood format, and was never meant to go mainstream. It will undoubtedly, however, always thrive within the realm of budding and broke filmmakers.

We, after all, live in a society where everyone who has an iPhone can gain access to a high definition camera.

But what’s now missing is “the blurring between fiction and reality,” as had been first promoted thanks to the aide of the Blair Witch mocumentary.

There’s something evil hiding in the woods… the Blair Witch. In cinemas on September 16.

*On July 22, 2016, an official trailer for the Blair Witch – the sequel was screened at the San Diego Comic-Con.

The film is released on September 16, 2016.

Litter Bug Breakout – 666 Bags of Rubbish Collected Across Milton Keynes’ Parks in One Week

By Sarah Featley
The Parks Trust, the self-funding charity that cares for Milton Keynes’ parks and green spaces, has reported a noticeable increase in littering across the city, with 666 bags of rubbish collected in just one week.
The combined weight of this rubbish adds up to over three tonnes – and the figure continues to rise across the busy summer period.
Data was compiled on litter found across the 2,200 hectares park system, with Willen Lake South generating the most rubbish; around three fifths of the total amount.
Rob Riekie, Landscape and Operations Director at The Parks Trust, commented: “It’s great to see so many people using the beautiful green spaces we have across Milton Keynes. Unfortunately, the increase in visitors across the summer months has led to a considerable rise in the amount of litter generated.
“People often don’t consider the impact of a drinks bottle here or a crisp packet there, but clearing litter costs us over £300,000 a year – money we’d far rather spend on improvements to parks and landscaping!”
Figures from environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy* further identify littering as a bad habit that most of us are guilty of, with stats revealing that 62 per cent of people in England drop litter, but only 28 per cent of people admit to it. Yet at the same time 62 per cent of people are concerned about the appearance of their area and 57 per cent consider litter to be a problem.
Rob added: “The Parks Trust is currently exploring new ways to minimise litter dropping, but we can all work together to make a real difference. People often ask us ‘why don’t you have more litter bins across the parks’, but the problem for us, is to be effective we would need a lot of bins to cover 5,000 acres of open space with all the cost of supplying and emptying those bins.

“A large proportion of the litter going to be deposited in those bins is from people who would have otherwise taken their litter home with them, which then further escalates our costs.  We’d ask anyone visiting our parks to take their litter home and dispose of it there – this will keep all the green spaces in Milton Keynes beautiful and inspiring for all to enjoy long into the future.”
